NEST - Nurturing Excellence in Student Teachers
NEST (Nurturing Excellence in Student Teachers) is a twelve week first semester delivery where fourth year Design & Technology Education students become peer mentors to all third year students in advance of teaching placement.
The time leading up to school placement can be stressful and provide a sense of uncertainty for student teachers, as they prepare resources for their placement. As a mentor for this program I provided the third years with advice and support in relation to their preparation for school placement as well as role play many possible scenarios they could encounter during placement. The fourth years provide advice and support in relation to their preparation from the reassuring perspective of somebody who has been there before.
In my role as a leader, my co-leader and I decided to provide information on how the new OneDrive online folders will operate. This was followed by a peer review and discussion providing formative feedback to participants. This type of group learning can be very beneficial as each person will share their knowledge on this technology.
Finally myself and fellow leaders peer reviewed SP3 schemes of work, lesson plans and resources giving constructive feedback to the students.
Students found it very beneficial before heading out on school placement, as it equipped students with the necessary skills to deal with such incidents from the perspective of students who have been in their situation.
